Our Rewilding Site near Kückenshagen
The 1,150 m² site managed by eMission-X is located near Kückenshagen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The property sits like a small island between a dirt road and intensively farmed fields.
The area was once used for agriculture itself. Today, the goal is to create more space here for natural development once again.
From Farmland Back to Nature
On former farmland, it is not always enough to simply cease economic use.
In Kückenshagen, we are therefore supporting the initial development phase through targeted tree and shrub plantings. The young trees and shrubs are intended to serve as the starting point for more structurally diverse vegetation.
Our goal here is not to establish a traditional commercial forest. The plantings are part of an initial renaturation effort.
In the long term, the area is intended to develop on its own with as little human intervention as possible.
Rewilding doesn’t always go according to plan
The first planting attempt on the site clearly demonstrated that rewilding sometimes involves setbacks.
After our initial planting, the area was once again cultivated for agriculture and planted with corn. As a result, all of the young trees and shrubs were lost.
To clearly mark the boundary of our rewilding area on-site in the future, stakes about two meters long will be placed along the property line at intervals of about two meters.
This will make it clearly recognizable to those managing the adjacent farmland where the agriculturally used area ends and our natural area begins.
Every tree gets its own identity
We have individually recorded the trees we planted in Kückenshagen and tagged them with NFC tags.
This gives each planted tree a unique identifier and allows it to be reassigned to the same data record during future surveys.
This allows us to track over the long term which trees are thriving, which are failing, and how individual trees change over the years.
A planting site thus simultaneously becomes a long-term, documentable data source.
Documenting Rewilding—Our AI Project
In the future, we also plan to use this data for our project on AI-supported monitoring and analysis of trees and vegetation.
The goal is to document the development of individual trees and the entire rewilding area in a traceable manner over extended periods of time.
We’re not only interested in how the planted trees and shrubs develop. Equally fascinating is the question of how the natural vegetation on the former farmland changes in parallel.
In the future, the collected data will also be used to test methods for the automated detection and analysis of vegetation.
The goal is not to permanently control natural development. Rather, the technology is intended to help us better observe, document, and track the long-term progress of rewilding.
Kückenshagen offers a particularly interesting test site for this: We know the initial conditions, the planted trees are individually marked, and their continued development can be tracked over the years.
A small island of nature amid farmland
At 1,150 m², Kückenshagen is one of our smaller rewilding sites.
However, especially in an intensively farmed agricultural landscape, such plots can create additional space for woody plants, wild herbs, and natural succession.
Our goal is for the former farmland to gradually transform into a more diverse natural area that, after the necessary initial restoration, can largely be left to develop on its own.
Permanently removed from agricultural use
The land remains the property of eMission-X and is permanently removed from agricultural use.
After the necessary initial restoration, therefore, one thing above all should happen:
Let nature take its course.
Supporting rewilding in Germany
With your support, we can acquire additional natural areas in Germany, permanently remove them from commercial use, and—where necessary—help them begin their journey back to a more natural state through initial restoration efforts.
