Two friends.
One mission.
More wilderness.
Sometimes the best ideas grow out of a friendship that has lasted for decades.
Julian and Till have known each other for over 30 years. Back then, we set up and packed down concerts together, worked as doormen in Hamburg and shared many a long night. Nature conservation had little to do with it at first. But even then, we preferred rolling up our sleeves to just talking about things.
Many years later, a very different question occupies our minds: Why is there so little true wilderness in Germany?
We protect forests, talk about species loss and discuss climate protection. At the same time, almost all land is used commercially, forests are managed, peatlands drained and landscapes increasingly shaped by people. Even where nature is protected, it is often not really free to develop.
We believe there must be another way.
A shared belief became eMission-X.
At some point, we decided to stop waiting for others to make a change. We wanted to act ourselves.
That was the beginning of eMission-X.
Our approach is simple and consistent: We buy land in Germany and return it to nature for good.
Woodland, peatland, meadows, farmland or waterways – we acquire properties, withdraw them from commercial use and let natural development take its course.
Where necessary and appropriate, we give nature a helping hand at the outset. After that, it should need as little human intervention as possible.
No timber harvesting.
No intensive farming.
No commercial exploitation.
Instead, natural succession, new habitats and the freedom for plants and animals to reclaim their place.
Why we buy land.
We believe that true wilderness protection needs long-term security.
That is why we choose ownership over temporary leases. As a non-profit organisation, we want to ensure that our land serves nature permanently and does not return to commercial use later.
No plot is inherently too small for us. Even an unassuming meadow, a small wood or an overgrown patch between agricultural fields can be valuable.
Of course, we cannot save nature in Germany on our own. But we can show that a different relationship with our landscape is possible.
With every property, the area where nature can take its own course grows a little larger.
We are not a conventional nature conservation organisation.
We do not come from traditional conservation organisations. Perhaps that is why we see some things differently.
We do not believe nature needs to be tended, shaped or managed everywhere. Sometimes the best thing we can do is simply leave it alone.
This takes knowledge, patience and sometimes practical help. We therefore want to increase scientific monitoring of our sites and document how habitats develop when people step back.
We are driven by the possibility of nature finding its own way again, rather than by an image of a perfect landscape.

More wild.
Two friends and a shared belief have grown into a non-profit organisation that now protects its own wilderness sites in several regions of Germany.
We know we will not change the world overnight. But we can make a start. Plot by plot. Square metre by square metre.
Because we believe Germany needs more than nature conservation. Above all, it needs more space where nature can simply be itself.
