8,600 m² of permanent grassland on peat soil
Location: Klein Breesen near Zehna, Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

Size: 8,600 m²
Location: Immediately south of our 8,600 m² protected peatland
area Rewilding: Cessation of agricultural use and natural succession
Status: Permanently removed from economic use
Our second site near Klein Breesen
Directly south of our protected bog habitat, eMission-X owns another 8,600 m² of natural land.
Unlike the bog area bordering it to the north, this is permanent grassland on bog soil.
Together, the two properties cover 17,200 m² and form a contiguous natural area that we are permanently removing from commercial use.
From an economic site back to nature
The history of this area could hardly be more at odds with our current goal.
The property formerly belonged to a chicken farm with more than 120,000 chickens and was part of an intensively farmed agricultural landscape.
Today, there is no longer any agricultural activity on our land.
Instead of mowing the meadow regularly or managing it in any other way, we want to observe how it changes without such human intervention.
Natural Succession on Peat Soil
On this site, we are initially focusing primarily on natural succession.
Grasses and herbs may change, new plant species may become established, and in the long term, woody plants may also develop.
We are not prescribing a specific end state. What matters most to us is that natural processes once again exert a greater influence on the site’s development.
We intend to monitor over the long term how quickly and in what direction the former permanent grassland changes.
Two Different Areas—One Natural Habitat
Of particular interest is the direct connection to the bog bordering our site to the north.
There, we’re trying to retain more water in the bog and thereby improve the hydrological conditions of the protected bog habitat.
On the southern grassland area, we’re taking a different approach: Here, the focus is initially on ceasing agricultural use and allowing the vegetation to develop naturally.
Thus, at Klein Breesen, there are two immediately adjacent areas with different starting conditions:
8,600 m² of protected bog + 8,600 m² of former agricultural grassland = 17,200 m² of space for nature.
Rewilding also means: observing
Not every rewilding area requires planting or other active measures.
Especially on the former grassland area near Klein Breesen, we’re interested in what happens when regular management ceases.
- Which plants will prevail?
- Will new woody structures emerge?
- How does the vegetation change over several years?
We would like to observe and document this development without influencing it through ongoing management.
Permanently removed from commercial use
The 8,600 m² area remains the property of eMission-X and is permanently removed from commercial use.
Together with the adjacent bog, this creates a larger contiguous area where natural processes are once again given more room to thrive.
Buy land. Cease use. Let nature take its course.
